How Do I Join and Get Started?

What Will My First Class Look Like As a Beginner?
Each class begins with a short sport-specific warm up. Your coach will then teach a series of functional techniques that you’ll get to practice with your chosen drilling partner. There will be plenty of time to ask questions too. We often end the class with a few “mini game” scenarios, allowing you to put your new techniques to the test. This leads us to the end of class where we share high fives and fist bumps and say goodbye until the next training session.
What Makes SBG Calgary Different From Other BJJ Gyms?
At SBG Calgary, we pride ourselves on being safe and inclusive. We train hard and crush our goals while still maintaining a safe and supportive training atmosphere. We have experienced Male and Female Head Coaches, a beautiful facility, and the absolute best people who will be your training parters and teammates.
Do I Need to Already Be Fit To Join?
Not at all! In fact, many of our students get involved to improve their fitness level! Not only will you be learning a valuable new skill, you’ll be learning how to move your body and workout in a different way. All of this takes time but you’ll quickly see an improvement in your overall fitness, cardio, and problem solving after only your first month of training consistently.
How to Belt Promotions Work?
The order of belt ranking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black.
Everyone starts as a white belt, no matter their age, physical condition, or previous martial arts experience. As your knowledge and ability increase from attending classes and putting your newly-acquired knowledge into practice, you’ll move through the belt ranks. Everyone will progress at their own pace and will be promoted accordingly. “All good things take time,” my momma said, and Jiu Jitsu is no exception.
It’s worth noting that, unlike many other martial arts schools, at SBG Calgary, we don’t charge you for belt promotions or testing, nor do we make you compete. We follow the IBJJF guidelines for Youth and Adult ranking.
How Many Days Per Week Should I Train?
Although we have a few students who can only train with us once per week, we feel 2 sessions per week is ideal for beginners. This will give you time to adjust your body and brain to Jiu Jitsu, and help you to make it a part of your day-to-day routine. If possible, we recommend leaving a day in between sessions to give yourself a chance to recover.
The key to success in Jiu Jitsu is consistency and mat time! Set a schedule and stick with it and you’ll be crushing your goals in no time.
When Should I Expect To See Results?
Right away! I often tell people that they will learn potentially life-saving skills in every single class and that includes the class you attend on Day 1.
