If you are searching for your first BJJ class in Calgary, here is exactly what to expect and how we keep beginners safe.
Trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the first time is exciting. It can also feel a little unknown. At Straight Blast Gym Calgary, we keep first classes relaxed, beginner-friendly, and focused on safety so you can learn at your own pace, meet great people, and have fun.
What should I wear and bring?
Short answer: Clean t-shirt and jogging pants, athletic shorts, or leggings without zippers. You may also wish to bring a full water bottle.
Remove jewellery. Trim fingernails and toenails. If you already own a jiu-jitsu uniform, you are welcome to wear it.

Do I need to be fit to start?
Short answer: No. We scale everything and you can go at your own pace.
Expect gentle movement prep, simple techniques, and cooperative drilling. You will never be pushed into something you are not ready for.
Will there be sparring on day one?
Short answer: No. We do not put beginners straight into live rounds.
Your coach will pair you with a compatible partner and you will practise techniques together safely. Live training is introduced gradually through our beginner-only Foundations path.
What actually happens in a first class?
Short answer: Arrive 15-20 minutes early, meet your coach, warm up, learn one or two core techniques, drill with a partner, then cool down and Q&A.

Who will I train with?
Short answer: Someone matched to your size and experience.
For safety and comfort, we match partners with care. New students are often paired with one of our experienced teammates for guidance. The culture is friendly and supportive. Everyone remembers their first class.
What if I have old injuries or I am over 40?
Short answer: Tell your coach at check-in and we will modify movements.
We prioritise joint-friendly mechanics, smart pacing, and clear communication. You can build skill and confidence without head impact, and you can take breaks any time.
Etiquette and hygiene basics
Short answer: Clean body and gear, shoes never on the mats.
Be coachable, be a good partner, and help keep the mats clean for everyone. If something hurts or feels off, stop and ask.
