So, you’ve decided to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) – amazing! Taking that first step is exciting, but we know that for some people, it can feel a bit intimidating, too. At Straight Blast Gym Calgary, we’re all about creating a relaxed, welcoming environment where you can learn at your own pace, make new friends, and have fun.
Here’s what you can expect in your very first BJJ class with us:
1. Meet New Friends and Instructors
When you walk through the doors, you’ll notice right away that BJJ is as much about community as it is about technique. You’ll be introduced to some of our coaches and other students, and they’ll likely be as excited as you are! Everyone remembers what it was like to step onto the mats for the first time, so don’t be surprised if people go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. You’re among friends here.
2. Easy-to-Follow Warmup to Get You Moving
Every class starts with a warmup tailored to prepare your body for the unique movements in BJJ. You can expect some light stretching, gentle movement drills, and a few exercises to get your blood flowing. The goal is to get comfortable with some of the fundamental movements and ease into class. If you’re worried about fitness level, don’t be! You can go at your own pace, and the coaches will guide you through everything.
3. Technique Time – Learning the Basics
In each beginner class, we start with fundamental techniques as if it’s everyone’s first day on the mats. This approach makes it easy to follow along, no matter if it’s your first class or your fifth. You’ll learn a few fundamental skills and we’ll break everything down step-by-step. Our coaches are there to answer questions, so feel free to ask if anything feels confusing. BJJ is all about building skill over time, and there’s no rush to get it all perfect on day one.
4. Partnered Drills with a Compatible Training Partner
You’ll also be matched with a training partner. Our coaches make sure you’re paired with someone compatible in experience and size, so you can practice techniques safely and with confidence. Your partner will be there to help you learn, and you’ll quickly realize that BJJ is a team effort. Practicing techniques together and helping each other out is all part of the experience.
5. Relaxed and Supportive Atmosphere
At Straight Blast Gym Calgary, we work hard to make sure each class feels comfortable and accessible to all levels. You’ll find that every person in class is there to support each other, and the relaxed environment helps everyone feel right at home. There’s no need to feel nervous about “keeping up” or “knowing all the moves.” Our beginner classes are designed so that everyone can learn at their own pace, from day one onward.
6. Cool Down and Q&A
We end each class with a cool down and a little time for Q&A. Whether you have questions about a specific move or just want to chat with your instructor, this time is for you. We’re here to help, and no question is too small!
