Jiu Jitsu Classes at SBG Calgary?

Absolutely not. The vast majority of the new students that enrol in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program have zero experience. All new students will begin their Jiu Jitsu journey in our Foundations program, learning the most fundamental (and most important) aspects of the art.

Absolutely not. Our classes are designed to build your fitness gradually, and many people begin training with us as a way to get in shape. Our Foundations classes, where all new students begin, are taught at a moderate pace so that you can gradually improve your conditioning as you go. If you feel like you’re out-of-shape and are intimidated about the thought of exercising in front of others, don’t you worry, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s be clear, there is value in participating in any martial art. Getting an opportunity to experience discipline, structure, and accountability is a great thing. Where Brazilian Jiu Jitsu separates itself from a martial art like karate or taekwondo is in its practicality. There is no martial art that is more applicable to real-life issues and bullying than Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Think about your typical bullying situation; a bigger person/kid picking on a smaller person/kid, right? BJJ was specifically developed to allow smaller people to defeat a larger opponent without having to throw a single punch.

This depends on your goals and schedule, but our standard recommendation is 2X per week. Of course, even once per week of training would be better than no training at all. Consistency is the key to progress.

Probably more so than it is for your child to play baseball, basketball, or soccer. Rest assured, your kids won’t be in here punching and kicking other students. We are all about teaching our kids how to defend themselves, but we do so in an incredibly controlled environment. One of the beautiful things about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that you’ll never need to throw a single strike for it to be effective. This allows for your child to defend themselves without getting in trouble at school for hitting another student.

Absolutely! Jiu-Jitsu is probably the best martial art for a woman to get involved with! More than any other martial art, Jiu Jitsu focuses on technique and leverage, allowing smaller practitioners to effectively defend themselves against larger opponents. We offer both co-ed and women-only classes so you can train where you feel most comfortable.

There's definitely a reason why so many celebrities and influential people in the world are studying BJJ. Jiu Jitsu offers numerous benefits, including improved physical fitness, self-defence skills, increased confidence, stress relief, and a strong sense of community.

We recommend wearing comfortable athletic wear such as a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants.

Unlike other Jiu Jitsu schools who often thrust students into a full martial arts class (which can feel super intimidating), all our new adult Jiu Jitsu students start in our Foundations program. In Foundations, we teach the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu in a controlled, collaborative, and non-intimidating environment.

Many students bring a bottle of water to class so that they can take a drink if they get thirsty. Water only though, please. No sports drinks.
